Case Study | Logo and Brand Identity Design

Project Overview

Que Arepa! is a vibrant food truck based in New York City, specializing in freshly made arepas that bring the authentic taste of Colombian cornmeal to the bustling streets. The goal was to create a fresh and memorable brand identity that would help the food truck stand out in the competitive food scene. Initially, the project focused on developing a primary logo, sub-logo, packaging design, and merchandise. However, as the case study progressed, the creative freedom allowed for the expansion of the brand identity, resulting in additional design elements that further elevated the overall brand experience.

Challenges

The main challenge was to design a brand that could capture the essence of Colombian culture while appealing to the diverse and fast-paced environment of New York City. It was crucial to create a visual identity that was not only eye-catching but also conveyed the authenticity of the product. Balancing the traditional aspects of Colombian cuisine with a modern, urban twist was key to ensuring that the brand would resonate with both locals and tourists. Additionally, the logo and packaging had to be versatile enough to work across various mediums, from truck signage to small packaging, without losing impact.

Process

Research & Inspiration: Began by exploring Colombian cultural elements and New York’s food truck scene to identify design opportunities that would help Que Arepa! stand out. This phase included researching competitors and understanding the visual language of street food.

Concept Development: Initial sketches focused on blending traditional Colombian motifs with modern design elements. This involved experimenting with bold colors, playful typography, and iconic imagery that would be both memorable and representative of the cuisine.

Logo Design: Created a primary logo that encapsulates the energy and vibrancy of Que Arepa!, followed by a sub-logo for versatility across different applications.

Packaging & Merch: Designed packaging that reflects the brand’s fun and lively personality, with a focus on functionality and visual appeal. Additionally, merch items were created to further extend the brand’s presence beyond the food truck.

Extended Branding: As the project evolved, additional elements such as social media templates, truck graphics, and promotional materials were developed, ensuring a cohesive brand experience across all touchpoints.

Logo Concept

The logo for “Que Arepa!” was designed to be as fresh and vibrant as the flavors it represents. Instead of relying on a ready-made font, I created a custom typeface that embodies the lively and quirky spirit of the brand. The typography is a playful mix, full of energy, which captures the essence of the food truck’s offerings.

A key element of the design is the integration of the “Q” and the “!” from “Que Arepa!” into a unique logo mark. This combination creates a bold and memorable symbol that stands out on its own, making it instantly recognizable and versatile for various branding applications. The result is a logo that is not only visually appealing but also distinct and easy to remember, perfectly aligning with the brand’s fun and dynamic personality.

Brand Colors

The color palette for “Que Arepa!” is thoughtfully chosen to reflect the vibrant and flavorful nature of the brand.

Cheddar Cheese serves as the core color, bringing warmth and energy that mirrors the rich, bold taste of the arepas.

Smoky Charcoal provides a grounding contrast, adding depth and sophistication to the design, ensuring the brand remains strong and versatile across different applications.

Crisp Cucumber introduces a refreshing element, offering a light and clean touch that balances the boldness of the palette. Together, these colors create a dynamic and memorable visual identity that helps “Que Arepa!” stand out in the competitive New York food truck scene.
